20 years after Soviet Union collapse

In December of 1991, as the world watched in amazement, the Soviet Union disintegrated into fifteen separate countries. Its collapse was hailed by the west as a victory for freedom, a triumph of democracy over totalitarianism, and evidence of the superiority of capitalism over socialism. Juris Podnieks was one of the most important directors to come out of Latvia and the former Soviet Union during the time of glasnost. Through his intense interviews, Podnieks was able to showcase critiques of the Soviet system and attitudes that were indicative of the rebellion that was to happen only a few years later in the Baltic States and elsewhere in the Soviet Union.

FIPRESCI Prize and IDA Awarded movie „Is it easy to be young?” (1986) discovers Soviet reality as “upside down” from perspective of young fellows. What have they done „Is it easy to be…after 10” (1998) and „Is it easy?” after 20 years (2010).

More films about life in Soviet Union, deportations, culture, integration, freedom, man’s fate and nations, who ask to accept their rights.
